PITTSBURGH, August 4, 2009 – Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine have learned that some healthy people naturally developed an immune response against a protein that is made in excess levels in many cancers, including breast, lung, and head and neck cancers. The finding suggests that a vaccine against the protein might prevent malignancies in high-risk individuals.

The Karmanos Cancer Institute made an investment in funding new pilot projects and awarded $25,000 each to 16 internal Strategic Research Initiative Grant new pilot projects. These projects involve more than 30 Karmanos members from various research programs. The funding began on July 1, 2009 for a period of one year.
