Schwartz, Ph.D. Interim President and Chief Executive Officer Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute MONROE, MI – Two hospital systems and one comprehensive cancer center are joining forces to bring world-renowned cancer services to Monroe, Michigan. Mercy Memorial Hospital System of Monroe (MMHS), ProMedica Health System of Toledo, and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center in Detroit have announced a joint venture agreement which will bring innovative, state-of-the-science cancer care to Monroe and the surrounding communities. Each of the health institutions will be equal partners in the joint venture. The agreement, forming the company Monroe Cancer Center, LLC, was recently approved by each organization’s executive leadership. A groundbreaking for the new cancer center is expected to take place by early 2010. The official name of the new center has not yet been determined. Read the rest of this entry »

DETROIT, MI – On Sept. 2, Dany Mercado of Kitchener, Ontario, along with family and friends, returned to the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center, in Detroit, where he had received a successful bone marrow transplant a year-and-a-half earlier. The gathering was not a follow-up doctor’s appointment. It was the first time Mercado, age 26, met his hero – Wesley Hamilton, M.D., age 30, of Abilene, Texas – Mercado’s bone marrow donor. The special meeting was coordinated by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center and the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP).

LITTLE ROCK – A University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) researcher on the cutting edge of nanotechnology has been awarded $2.3 million in three grants to further groundbreaking developments in the prevention of lethal cancer metastasis and take his team’s findings to the first clinical trial of its kind.
