ORLANDO, FL (UroToday.com) - Intravesical chemotherapy and intravesical BCG both reduce the recurrence rate in patients with stage Ta, T1 bladder cancer, however the benefit of BCG relative to chemotherapy for long-term endpoints, especially in intermediate risk patients, is still controversial. The objective is to compare after transurethral resection (TUR) the long-term efficacy of 6 weekly intravesical instillations of epirubicin, bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) and BCG plus isoniazid followed by 3 weekly maintenance instillations at months 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30 and 36 in patients with intermediate and high risk stage Ta T1 papillary bladder cancer.

BSD Medical Corp. (NASDAQ: BSDM) reported that in the Annals of Oncology (Volume 19, Supplement 2, 2008), the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Clinical Treatment Guideline Working Group has published its relevant clinical treatment guidelines under “Soft tissue sarcomas: ESMO Clinical Recommendations for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up.” The guidelines highlight hyperthermia therapy as a treatment option for several types of soft tissue sarcomas. The ESMO Guidelines Working Group includes most leading clinical experts from European Comprehensive Cancer Centers such as GR Institut Gustave Roussy Villejuif (France); Istituto Nazionale Tumori Milan (Italy); Erasmus MC Daniel den Hoed Cancer Center (Rotterdam, Netherlands); UMS Heidelberg (Germany); M. Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center Warsaw (Poland); University Hospital Gasthuisberg of the Catholic University Leuven (Belgium); Munich Grosshadern University Medical School in Munich (Germany); Royal Marsden Hospital (London, United Kingdom); Charite UMS Berlin (Germany); Norwegian Radium Hospital (Oslo, Norway); Centre Pluridisciplinaire d’Oncologie, CHUV Lausanne (Switzerland) and some sarcoma centers of excellence in the Unites States such as MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston); Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (New York) and Dana Faber Cancer Institute (Boston).
The guidelines describe how a multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment improves clinical outcomes. According to the guidelines, “One randomized study provided evidence that regional hyperthermia in addition to systemic chemotherapy may be associated with a local and disease-free survival advantage.”
The study referenced is a response to the results reported from a 340-patient randomized international phase III clinical trial involving high-risk soft tissue sarcoma patients. The study was conducted under the quality control of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC 62961) and documented by the National Institutes of Health (NCT00003052). The control group for this study consisted of patients who received chemotherapy alone, and the experimental group received hyperthermia therapy (provided by BSD-2000 systems manufactured by BSD Medical Corp.) along with chemotherapy. The results of this study were disclosed at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2007 annual meeting held in Chicago, and ESMO’s guidelines follow the results of that clinical study.

An international panel of medical professionals, industry specialists and scientists along with universities such as “La Sapienza,” Rome, Italy and University of Ontario, Institute of Technology, Toronto, Canada will conduct a public scientific review of Dario Crosetto’s 3D-CBS (Three Dimensional Complete Body Screening) innovative technology June 23, 2008 broadcast live via web. This breakthrough in medical imaging technology whose validity has been recognized for years by science and technology and recently confirmed by others (including Siemens, who said in 2002 that Crosetto’s claims were impossible) will permit the use of PET (Positron Emission Tomography) technology safe enough for routine examination of apparently healthy people for early detection of cancer.

ORLANDO, FL (UroToday.com) - When should one clamp the renal hilum at partial nephrectomy?
Never — according to investigators from Nara, Japan. Fujimoto and colleagues report a series of 162 patients (167 renal units) who underwent partial nephrectomy for tumors 4 cm or less. Tissue was resected using a microwave tissue coagulator (MCT). Median blood loss was 200cc (5-2,982). Five patients underwent nephrectomy for uncontrolled bleeding, prolonged urine leak, or “oncological” reasons. Overall cancer-specific outcomes were consistent with other series. No significant changes in renal function as judged by creatinine clearance were seen even in patients with imperative indications for surgery. These results are noteworthy, as the authors avoided renal ischemia in all cases.
