ProStrakan Group plc (LSE: PSK), the international specialty pharmaceutical company, announces that the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) has issued a positive opinion recommending approval of Abstral (formerly branded as Rapinyl), the fast-acting tablet for breakthrough cancer pain. ProStrakan plans to launch Abstral in Sweden in Q3 2008 and, as a result of today’s announcement, across Europe from the end of 2008.

ORLANDO, FL (UroToday.com) - Dr. E. David Crawford presented information on challenges facing clinical trials from SWOG, ECOG and CALGB. Patient accrual for clinical trials is only 2-3%. Innumerable layers of rules and regulations have been created with numerous layers that increase costs and delays. He applauded prevention trials such as PCPT, SELECT, Toremifene for PIN and REDUCE.

Patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) are often treated with cytokine therapy, although the effect is modest and second-line therapy is often warranted. Relatively little is known regarding the impact on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in cytokine-refractory patients. This study examined the HRQOL of patients with metastatic RCC treated with axitinib, a new targeted therapy that affects the vessels supplying blood to the tumor.

Systematic transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsy (TRUSBx) is the gold standard for detecting prostate cancer. This systematic approach is characterized by low sensitivity (39-52%) and high specificity (81-82%). Magnetic resonance (MR)-guided biopsy techniques are becoming more and more available, but there is no current consensus on the optimal technique.

Pregnancy seems to confer some protection against bladder cancer in mice, scientists have found. Female mice that had never become pregnant had approximately 15 times as much cancer in their bladders as their counterparts that had become pregnant, according to new findings by investigators at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), there will be approximately one million new cases of skin cancer diagnosed in the United States in 2008. The AAD says that about one in every five Americans will develop skin cancer some time during his/her lifetime.
